Wealth of Vision /
Commissioned artist
National Portrait Gallery, Scotland

This was a ground-breaking outreach education project which invited youth groups from disadvantaged areas in Edinburgh to produce photographs, which represent their response to historical paintings in the National Galleries of Scotland collection. Making these historic paintings relevant to young people was one of the main aims of the project. Having chosen a painting and researched its meaning in its original context, the groups’ then represented this story in a contemporary setting.

Working with an artist, each group used imaginative and critical skills to re-interpret the scenes of the paintings in the present day. Digital technology was used in group workshops to produce a large-scale photograph featuring the participants re-enacting their chosen picture. All the work made by the groups involved was presented in an acclaimed final exhibition, staged in venues in the group’s local areas, including a supermarket, as well as at the Portrait Gallery. A strong social impact was made by the contrast of the old and new works on display side by side.

This project was in collaboration with arts organisations based in the Social Inclusion Partnership (SIP) areas of Edinburgh, namely Craigmillar Community Arts, North Edinburgh Arts, Out of the blue; Art in South Edinburgh and WHALE, and the Arts & Social Inclusion Project based at the Capital City Partnership.
